Nail Repair Rescue!

Today on the blog I'm going to show you how to repair a nail that has a tear. It's a sad day when this happens but it's not a total loss! You don't have to cut your nail down to the tear and have one nail shorter than the rest....or worse....trim them all down!
So, today I come to you with a tutorial solution! This is not a permanent fix but it usually lasts for about 2-3 weeks (or 2-3 manis) on me. It's also only intended to be used until you feel comfortable with filing the nail down to the tear.
As you can see in the photo below, the tear in my nail is on my thumb and would be pretty painful if I tried to cut/file it down that much.

Allow me to show you how I deal with this situation.
First you'll need to gather your supplies.
Here's what I use:
- A tea bag (does not have to be Lipton...you'll be dumping the contents)
- scissors
- a nail buffer (my favorite is the Tropical Shine 4-way buffer from Sally's)
- a bottle of brush-on nail glue
- an orange stick
- a base coat (I used Orly Bonder for this tutorial)
- a nail color (I chose OPI "Goldeneye" from the James Bond collection)
- a top coat (I don't use anything but Seche Vite!)

Open the tea bag by cutting the top of it off.

Dump and dispose the tea. You only nead the actual bag for the repair.

Open the tea bag up and cut one side so that you have one flat piece. (You're only going to use a small portion of the tea bag per repair. Save the material for future use!)

My tea bag once it has been cut open.
Next, you are going to cut a small piece out to fit over the tear in your nail and little bit around it. My piece is about the size of half of my tumb nail.

Take your nail glue and brush some onto the nail where you'll be applying the tea bag. Try not to get the glue on your skin or cuticle...it's not easy to get off!

Working quickly, lay the tea bag on your nail covering the tear. Being careful not to let it overhang your cuticle or the side edge of the nail. If it hangs over the tip of the nail it can always be filed off.

Use your orange stick to gently press the sides of the tea bag onto the nail.

Chances are you will need to apply more nail glue as it dries pretty quickly. No problem. Just brush some more glue on top of the tea bag being careful not to fold, wrinkle or pull the tea bag off the nail.

Using your orange stick again, gently press down all sides of the tea bag (focusing on the tear) and work out any bubbles or wrinkles.

At this point in the process, your nail will probably look something like this. Kind of rough, not really pretty. Don't worry though! We're not done yet. ;)

Once you're sure the nail glue has dried completely use your buffer and gently buff over the surface that you've just repaired. Don't go too crazy with the buffing! You just want to smooth the surface, not remove the tea bag entirely.

My repaired and buffed nail....not finished yet!

Next you're going to take your base coat and apply a thin layer over the whole nail and allow it to dry.
It should start looking much better at this stage of the process!

Take the polish of your choice and apply two thin layers and finish it off with a top coat!
Voila! Just like new! :)

I hope this tutorial was helpful to you! Let me know if there are other nail care issues you would like me to cover on the blog. Thanks for reading!

St. Patrick's Day Nails!

Just a quick, festive mani for the upcoming holiday! I'm not even a little bit Irish but my married name is so that counts...right?!

The main green I used in the manicure is China Glaze "Running In Circles". Love this color! Just a quick French mani with some hand painted lines (in the colors of the Irish flag!) for added flair. :)

Happy St. Patrick's day!

Love, Lindsay :)

GO RAVENS! Super Bowl 2013 Manicure!

As promised, here is my Ravens Super Bowl manicure! :)
I told my husband and my dad that if the Ravens made it to the Super Bowl that I would do a Ravens manicure! I'm not a football fan but I do love Baltimore.
I decided to do the menacing Raven's eyes on my middle and ring nails with some "explosion" accent nails.
I used Orly Charged Up, Sinful Colors Black On Black, OPI Dazzled By Gold, Essie Laquered Up, Sinful Colors Snow Me White and (of course) Seche Vite as my top coat.

Hope you enjoyed this mani and have a great Super Bowl weekend!
GO RAVENS!

Happy Birthday to ME...and my BLOG!

That's right! My blog turns 1 today! ;)
Oh, and I turn 29. :P Obviously I did my nails for the occasion!
So, here is my birthday manicure. Nothing too crazy. I wanted to go with a chic but sparkly look today so I did a Half Moon manicure using Layla Holographic in Flash Black and a new polish that my husband gave me for Christmas from the new OPI Mariah Carey collection in Anti-Bleak. I love both of these polishes and would highly recommend them. (Mariah Carey Collection is in stores now...go by it!)

I hope you all enjoy my birthday as much as I will! haha

Blue Glitter Explosion!

I just love the clean look of a tape manicure! Can't beat it in my opinion! Today I did an "explosion" design using Essence Colour & Go in "Grey-t To Be Here", Essence Colour & Go in "Black is Back" and OPI's "Absolutely Alice". The colors kinda go with the weather today...dark and cloudy. I like it though!

I even ended up doing this design on my toes! This RARELY happens! I usually end up having a manicure that doesn't match my pedicure. Mostly because I hate giving myself a pedicure. :P LOVE painting my fingernails....not so much the toes. Oh well!

Enjoy the Blue Glitter Explosion mani!

With a flash.

Toes! :P

....toes again!

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

Healthy Nail Care Tips

Since I've started this blog and people have taken notice of this hobby of mine, I've been getting more and more questions related to nail care.
"How do you grow them so long?"
"Why do my nails always peel?"
"How do I keep the polish from chipping the day after I paint my nails?"

So this post will be a work in progress. I will try to update this with general nail health tips and answers to questions I am often asked.
AHHH! Don't look at me! I'M NAKED! :P

  • "How can I get my nails to grow?"
There are a couple of things that can help nail growth. First, make sure you're eating healthy and drinking plenty of water! (You already know that though!)
I personally take a Biotin supplement (found in drug stores, target etc).
This is the one I take and I purchased this from Target. It really does help your nails grow long and strong. I sometimes find myself annoyed at how long they are!
BONUS: It will also help you hair grow long and strong as well!

You should also make sure you're keeping your cuticles and nail bed moisturized. Some products I've tried and really liked are:
LUSH's Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter

OPI's Avoplex Cuticle Oil To Go

CND's Solar oil

California Mango Mend

  • "Why am I getting peelies at the edge of my nail?"
You need to perfect your filing and maybe get a better nail file. Never EVER use a "sawing" motion when filing. This is the main cause of "peelies". Always file in one direction and NEVER FILE YOUR NAILS WHEN THEY ARE WET! It will cause your nails to peel and tear. Yuck.
The next thing to address would be what kind of file you are using. You may need to look into a better file.
If you are you are using this kind of file...
...you should pretty much just kiss any kind of nail health goodbye. :P Metal files are gross. You are only accentuating the peeling with this and you're better off using the sidewalk to file your nails.
A better (and cheap!) alternative are the Tropical Shine Files that can be found at Sally Beauty Supply.

I have this one:
I use the Tropical Shine Blue file 220/320 grit for taking down length and shaping.

I also have this one:
I use the Tropical Shine Pink file 400/800 grit for sealing the nail edge.

What is "sealing the nail edge", you ask? Well, my dears, it is an essential step for avoiding those dreaded PEELIES!
After you are finished taking down length/shaping, hold your finer grit file at a 45 degree angle to your nail and rub the file upwards along the edge. You're not holding the file horizontal to the nail like you would if you were taking down length.
I hope my bad photoshop arrows help.... :/

Repeat this process in a downward motion...

Then get the corners of the nail by hold this file as shown in the picture below and pulling the file upwards.
You've just sealed the free edge of your nail! Go, YOU!

Another file I like is the Nail Tek Crystal File.
It's a little more expensive but it's great for keeping in my purse and for travel. It's a pretty versatile file and the grit will never wear off. It also comes with a handy little case so the other things in your purse don't get scratched! I don't really like to use it for taking down length though (it's a finer grit) because it takes forever. That's why I use my Tropical Shine files at home.

I hope this post helps and I plan on updating it soon with more answers to your questions!
Do YOU have a question you would like me to answer here? Feel free to ask!
I would love to help if I can! :)

Geometricky!

First official post of the summer! :D
Not sure of the inspiration for this nail design(s)...it just sort of...evolved into this! haha
I started with just the yellow (Zoya Pippa) and (because I cant leave well enough alone!) I added a tape design with Orly Fancy Fuchsia and OPI Fly the next day. I think it turned out to be a fun, summer-y manicure!
What do you think? What colors are you wearing on your nails this summer?

Neons and Neutrals

Neons and neutrals are currently my favorite color combination. It looks so fresh and it doesn't come off as obnoxious as neons sometimes can. This past weekend I did my sister's and my nails in two different neon and neutral color combos.

On my nails I have: OPI My Pointe Exactly (a BEAUTIFUL grey jelly from the NYC Ballet collection) and Julep Hayden (a neon peach)

Two toned french manis are 10x better than regular a regular french...Just my opinion!

On my sisters nails (the bottom hand): Essie Jazz and China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy (the perfect neon pink!)

Hope you enjoy our neon and neutrals! I would love to see what you come up with! :D
